On 4th August 2026, the 3rd Year GNM students of St. Philomena’s School of Nursing marked World Breastfeeding Week with an awareness programme at the OPD block of St. Philomena’s Hospital. The programme was supervised by the faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing and was built around this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”

The programme began at 10:00 AM, with Nyima Lhamo and Rachel Rufina of 3rd Year GNM as hosts. The 3rd Year GNM choir opened with a prayer song, asking God’s blessings on the programme. Sr. Tikimani of 3rd Year GNM then gave the welcome address, greeting the dignitaries, faculty members, hospital staff and everyone present. The programme was graced by Nursing Superintendent Sr. Stella, ward in-charges from various departments, and the teaching faculty of the School of Nursing.

The students performed a short drama on the benefits of breastfeeding and the common challenges mothers face, followed by a demonstration of correct positioning and attachment of the baby at the breast. Their presentation carried the theme’s message that breastfeeding does best when families, health workers, employers and communities all support the mother together. To reach every member of the audience, the students also gave a health talk in three languages: English, Tamil and Kannada.

Outpatients, their attendants and hospital staff received the session warmly and asked many practical questions. The presence of senior nursing staff showed the hospital’s commitment to promoting breastfeeding. For the students, the programme was valuable hands-on learning in health education and community engagement. Building on the response, the organisers recommended that the hospital continue breastfeeding outreach programmes, provide printed educational materials for mothers and families, and consider setting up a regular breastfeeding support service within the hospital.

Sr. Arnita of 3rd Year GNM gave the vote of thanks, thanking the dignitaries, teaching faculty, hospital staff, students and participants for their presence, support and contribution. The programme ended at 11:00 AM.
